National Institute for Marine Research and Development “Grigore Antipa” – NIMRD (Coordinator)

The National Institute for Marine Research and Development “Grigore Antipa” – NIMRD is is the leading marine research institution in Romania, as well as national coordinator and focal point with respect to international research tasks and responsibilities in the field of marine science. The Institute operates under the coordination of the Ministry of Environment and Forests and its research activities are mainly oriented towards supporting adequate marine and coastal environmental management and protection.

The NIMRD undertakes fundamental, applied and technological development research in oceanography, marine and coastal engineering, ecology and environmental protection, and management of living resources in the Black Sea and other ocean areas.

It is the support for solving the national and international problems regarding the Romanian marine sector and the Black Sea Exclusive Economical Zone, according to Romania’s tasks assumed within international conventions. Also, NIMRD insure the national, regional and European marine strategies/ plans implementation.

According to the establishing legal document, NIMRD is the technical operator of the physical, chemical and biological national network for marine waters and for coastal erosion surveillance.

National Institute of Marine Geology and Geoecology – GeoEcoMar (Partner)

The National Institute for Marine Geology and Geoecology - GeoEcoMar of Romania, is a research and development organisation, functioning as a public institution coordinated by the Ministry of Education and Research. The main directions of research and development activities of GeoEcoMar are:

  1. Structure and function of specific ecosystems within the macro-geo-system Danube River-Delta-Black Sea,
  2. Studies on coastal zone integrated management,
  3. Global changes-climate changes,
  4. Diagnosis and prognosis studies on marine science development,
  5. Set-up and operation of marine observation systems.

GeoEcoMar operates a research fleet composed of R/V Mare Nigrum (a multipurpose ship, operating in the Black Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean) and R/V Istros (a coastal ship, serving on the NW Black sea shelf). The land facilities of GeoEcoMar consist of laboratories for biology, geochemistry, sedimentology, geophysics, GIS and datasets, located in Constanta and Bucharest.

"Ovidius" University of Constantza – OUC (Partner)

"Ovidius" University of Constanta is a higher education institution with legal personality, part of the state education system in Romania. It is organized and operates according to the National Education Law nr.1/2011. It is an independent entity that is providing education services for 20000 students in 16 faculties.

The university autonomy, based on the Constitution and National Education Law no. 1 / 2011, is asserted by the freedom of decision of the University in issues with regard to the structure of the institution, educational, research, administrative and financial activities as well as its relations with similar institutions in the country and abroad.

Based on the autonomy, "Ovidius" University of Constanta has the right to self-management, self-organization and development, according to their needs and respecting the law.

Institute of Oceanology – Bulgarian Academy of Science - IO-BAS (Partner)

The Institute of Oceanology, BAS, Varna is affiliated to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. IO-BAS is the main national research institute for marine investigations in the field of coastal dynamics, marine physics, chemistry, geology, biology, ecology, and underwater investigations. The mission of IO-BAS is to:

  • Conduct advanced research in the field of marine physics, chemistry, geology, archaeology, biology, ecology, coastal dynamics and ocean technologies and interdisciplinary monitoring of the Bulgarian part of the Black Sea basin;
  • Formulate the scientific background for sustainable management of the Black Sea ecosystem and its living and non-living resources; Develop guidelines for implementation the EU environmental policy and mitigation strategy against anthropogenic pollution including global climatic impact;
  • Offer consultancy services to policy and decision makers, stakeholders and industry at local (district, municipality), national and Black Sea regional level;
  • Provide education for high quality marine scientists;
  • Promote research for increased public awareness and shaping the public opinion in favour of the marine wildlife and Black Sea natural heritage conservation.

IO-BAS hosts the Bulgarian National Oceanographic Data Centre (BGODC) currently included in the international network for data exchange of International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange committee (IODE) of Intergovernmental oceanographic commission (IOC) of UNESCO, ODINBLACKSEA and serves as a local portal for the national and international exchange of oceanographic data in real time.

SINOP University - Fisheries Faculty - SNU-FF (Partner)

Sinop University is a state university founded in 2007. It is located in Sinop where is the North of Turkey, on the coast of the Black Sea. Today, according to the October 2011 statistics, there are a total of 4207 students and a total of 351 academic staff members. The university is currently considered to be one of the youngest universities of Turkey.

Sinop University is a regional university with faculties and schools. Sinop University is comprised of 3 faculties (Fisheries Faculty, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Arts and Science) with a total 12 undergraduate programs, 1 health school, 4 vocational schools (2 years), 2 graduate schools (Natural and Applied Sciences, Social Sciences).

The academic staff has responsibility for teaching to undergraduate students, with field courses and lectures in Sinop.

The Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences of Sinop University has been established to regulate, administrate and control the graduate education. At the present, the graduate school offers both M.Sc. degree and Ph.D. degree in three academic departments, namely Main Branch of Basic Science of Fisheries Faculty, Main Branch of Fishing Technology and Processing and Main Branch of Aquaculture. Faculty also offers 2-year M.Sc. courses in Marine Biology and Ecology, Environmental Science (Marine Pollution, Toxicology), Fishing Technology, Fish Processing and Aquaculture. An important activity at Fisheries Faculty is training in research. Supervised by members of the teaching staff, postgraduate students undergo four years of research training for the Ph.D. degree, their work often contributing to the research programmes maintained by the staff. Students are accepted from all other provinces in Turkey.

TUBITAK, the Marmara Research Center (Subcontractor)

The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) is the public agency put in charge of promoting, developing, organising, conducting and coordinating research and development in line with the national targets of economical development and technical progress. Marmara Research Centre (MRC) is the oldest and largest research organisation under TUBITAK. The aim of MRC is to conduct applied research projects integrated with national and international industrial entities in a customer focused policy. The contract-based projects are the key factors of business resulting demonstrations and system integration through new product development.
